This great little home-made video is that of new band ‘Keston Cobblers Club’ - who (like many of us out there) are trying to break out into the big bad world. The band does bear relevance to ShellsuitZombie but I’m afraid I’m not at liberty to divulge (ALL WILL BE REVEALED SOON!!). For now, however, please do help these kids out by grabbing a copy of their single here (79p = bargain!)

Keston Cobblers Club have many talents… amongst them are, in fact, designers in disguise! Evidence can be found on their beautifully compiled website.

A fantastic little animation from Seb Pietrovito. More animations to be discovered on his site (which is suitably endearing).

sam hodges

Graphic design student Sam Hodges of Leeds University has created a self-promotional book to set himself apart from the sea of designers out there. Sam is currently on the hunt for a placement, and what better way than to send an eye-catching mailer for your favourite agencies to have a play with. A nice concept for the opening mechanism - take a look at his website.

Nikki_Farquharson

Now we all know this feeling… This stunning pen and ink print is that of Nikki Farquharson, a graduate from London College of communications. She’s produced some really nice mixed media stuff - combined with some great ideas and perspectives on things (this is all a bit vague so just check out her website).

JR1

These freaky images are the works of an undercover photographer known as ‘JR’ who has plastered the walls and bridges of the Seine River with conspicuous images of eyes. The dozen pairs of eyes glaring at passers by are to raise awareness of issues in third world countries, bringing people seen in the media every day closer to home. The exhibition Women Are Heroes showcases JR’s world tour, telling the story of a dozen women.

Mirror ball close-up

Whilst taking little jog last week around the Jardins de Luxembourg in Paris, I was grounded to a halt by a giant disco ball in the middle of the path. I’m not usually into installation art but this was hard to miss, and was literally the size of a house!! Since nobody else seemed to be taking a second glance, I figured maybe this was just an everyday thing in France. You never can tell with the French after all…

It all made sense a few days later, however, when on Saturday night I spotted a beaming light sweeping over Paris. The ginormous 7.5m mirror ball was suspended over the Palais de Lux on a crane, lit with five DCA projectors (see below - sadly my iPhone camera did not do it justice). It was Nuit Blanche, where on the first Saturday of October, the City has an all-nighter arts and music festival. Sure to be a Guinness record, the artist responsible is Michel de Broin.

mirror ball distance

Shame the video is on a loop (I was expecting something amazing to happen second time round!) but nonetheless an impressive stop motion animation by Blu and David Ellis. So it does actually seem that these guys just stay up all night every day and night painting walls - but the results are fascinating to watch!

These guys from The Creative Circus were on a mission to get all the way from Atlanta Georgia, USA to London to pick up their D&AD award. Easy eh? Not if you’re skint. In order to raise the $10,000 they needed, they asked agencies to ‘help them pack their bags’ with random objects such as a errr rubber chicken?! They then ran around London carrying out various tasks with these objects, sending back a postcard (with photographic evidence) to the relevant agency on completion of each task.

Their mission must have been a success since we bumped into the team at the D&AD awards ceremony; they were definitely there. I think that The London Project got such a great response due to not only their hard work and determination, but also their sheer enthusiasm - it was an inspiration to see them having so much fun with it.

vincent vella

covered

A nice concept for a compilation CD of cover versions… That is all.

mac packaging

Graphic Design graduate Atish Mistry has a particularly fine talent when it comes to packaging. The thing that amazes me is the professional finish he achieves whilst using basic, traditional materials and processes such as card and screenprinting. Not only that, but he is also creative with his work - striving to come up with something different. This, combined with elegant attention to detail, produces some neat work.

This news website is different from your average… it checks Fox news for updates and highlights the headline changes as and when they happen. Nice, original idea - whether it works as efficiently as they claim I do not know.

Illustration graduate Mark Penman sent us his refreshing portfolio, largely consisting of quirky (and some dark!) images and characters.

He also has some comic work to show - go to www.m-d-penman.co.uk to see more.

No Days Off_1

London-based design agency ‘No Days Off’ have some nice print work; in particular their typographical pieces. Selected prints are available to buy from their shop. One that catches my eye is the ‘Dot to death’ series, a timeline of a rockstar’s life displayed in a clever way to create an image. Below is the Ian Curtis print.
