The second prize haul for Tuesday’s NOW SOLD OUT VS event is a couple of brilliant limited edition prints from Student Designer, ShellsuitZombie contributor and irritatingly talented Midlander [Stoke, bleugh] Andy Cooke. I warn you, I will personally be fighting tooth and nail for one of these bad boys, so bring your A game dickheads (nothing personal). If you want to jump the gun and snaffle one up right now, go to his shop here.

Still more to come you beautiful people (I’m feeling a bit bad about saying the dickheads thing now)

50 students and graduates. 50 professionals. Two bands. Two DJs. Some beers. And unfortunately we will be there too.

Come one come all to witness a gladitorial battle – observe a series of physically and mentally gruelling tasks designed specifically to test us all. Grip your beer white-knuckled as your agility and nerves are put to the test. Or just help us unite the current and future leaders of the design and advertising industries at utilising a mixture of beer, chat and music.

Some people have asked so we thought we’d give you a bit of an update on who is coming along to VS (which is now in a week!). Here are a few of the rival industry crews who should be rocking up for a pint.

Creatives from:
W+K
AMVBBDO
Fallon
Wunderman
Profero
Billington Cartmell
Morph London
Clinic
Magpie Studio
The Plant
A+B
Dry
D&AD
Glug
Merrell
Mesh

That plus students and graduates from all over London and the UK. Bring your uni down and REPREZENT.
We also have some lush giveaways and prizes (objects, posters, buttons and other ephemera) from Dry, Magpie Studio, A+B and ourselves.

MUSIC
Musical entertainment will be provided by two bands who have been picking up lots of radio airtime and have both recently released debut singles -

First up we have Keston Cobblers Club, a South London folk four-piece
.

And second up it’s Harrison Hope, a North London outfit known for
melodic soulful rock.

As well as these two awesome live acts we also have a mega treat in the form of ‘The Liberal Democrats’ – a duo of DJ’s who have recently worked with Ali Love and Erol Alkan (including designing this Tee) and are currently working the London circuit. David Rudnick was responsible for the Annie Mac mini mix last week – believe us these boys will blow your socks off.
Download a free 80 minute taste of David Rudnick right Here courtesy of us.

If this sounds like your cup of tea, click on the poster up top to go straight to our shop, where you can pay the paltry price of £2.50 for your ticket (It will be £3 on the door, that’s if there’s even space!). What’s more, with the cost you will recieve a free badge and a poster on the day so you NEVER FORGET US.

7pm, Tuesday 16th of Feb, The Old Blue Last, Shoreditch. Drop it like it’s hot motherfucker.

Well, only 6 days late and a merry New Year to Everyone. A January of mince-pie-belly-related guilt offset/worsened by extra calorie-burning trudging through seemingly endless snow eh? Well in case anyone is interested, ShellsuitZombie have HUGE PLANS for 2010.

First of all, it’s looking like our initial dreams of a print magazine are finally to come true – we don’t want to give away too much at the moment but we are teaming up with a brilliant independent magazine to bring you a mega issue one of the ShellsuitZombie manifesto, our grads guide to being a grad. We all found our first eighteen months fucking tough so this should hopefully help others get through it. The best news about this is WE NEED YOUR HELP. Much of the magazine will be made up of content submitted or written by you guys. More on this another time.

Secondly, our next (and biggest yet) event is on February the 16th, at THE OLD BLUE LAST PUB in Shoreditch, East London. We will be announcing details next week and there will only be limited tickets so we really wanna see those fingers…

Finally, We will be once again playing a big part in D&AD New Blood, held this year at Free Range in the Truman Brewery. God knows how the crumblies at the deed worked it out but they’ve come up with a great solution to some of the issues of last years event and we are honoured and excited to be involved.

In the meantime we will of course be providing brilliant graduate, student and pro work through this, our blog. yum yum sild.

A snowball fight taking place at 1am, Times Square NYC on the 19th of December. The photos (getting away with using the sepia setting for once) lend a timeless air to what is a timeless activity. It’s just a pity us Londoners got a half-hearted dusting rather than a bad-ass dump like this.

See all the photos here, and thanks to Ryan for the spot.

rolling acres mall

Brian Ulrich (www.melodramaticwebaddress.com) is an eminent Chicago photographer whose photos capture aspects of very American, suburban life.  His studies of Retail and Thrift are an interesting combination of beautifully composed, colourful still life images with some very dynamic portraits of shoppers and staff.  However, for me his most striking work is his study of abandoned malls and stores from around America, the ghostly buildings are in various states of decay: from very recently closed to post-apocalyptic.  For more background info on this work, there is an interview with Ulrich here.

Let’s be honest, for most of us every hour spent online looking at ‘inspirational work’ is matched by another spent dilly-dallying on a mixture of social networking sites, wandering around corners of the internet we will never visit again looking at stuff we will forget and for a few of us looking for/at porn.

Why then is it that the only part of that time we often value as culturally enhancing* is the design/illustration/advertising? Sod that, sites like b3ta, yayhooray et al have provided as much cultural reference for my fundamentally puerile giggling-schoolboy mind as anything more high-brow, and I’m not afraid to admit it.

If you spend more than ten minutes on ffffound** you start to feel like you’ve seen it all before, but it’s highly unlikely you’ll have set your eyes on things quite like this and this. Of course I’m not saying design blogs should have more gags, it’s great to have both options, but rather than sidelining these dawdling hours as fluff, maybe we should embrace tham as a valid source of inspiration. Some of the best ad ideas have come from web nonsense after all.

And who knows, it might just stop people writing something in helvetica oblique on a space picture and calling it design…

*obviously not including the porn, which is incredibly culturally enhancing.

Oi. Yeah you. Did you know that for the price of your birthday suit £6 you could get:

1. A beautiful double sided B2 poster (see more pics here)
2. A useful tube for putting things in
3. a couple of hand-printed flyers for good measure
4. a few jealous mates

All you need do is one of two things. Either email stuff@shellsuitzombie.co.uk or get on your twitter account and send this message: ‘RT @shellsuitzombie I’M GETTING A FREE SPIN POSTER BY RETWEETING THIS‘ along with your email address. We will then send you an email asking for £2 for P+P via paypal and within a week the good stuff’s yours.

Forget that. Just get to our shop here and pay up.

Just to put it in perspective, Spin (who designed the gold side) usually sell their posters for up to £20 + P and P. We aren’t selling ours, we’re giving them away. AND THEY’RE PRINTED IN GOLD!

£2 £6. That’s less more than a big mac, but less than the meal if you have a mcflurry. And you can’t hang a big mac (or a mcflurry) on your wall [very effectively].

Err, well this is an experiment. We will be at New Blood 09 over the coming few days and anyone at the show is welcome to tweet from our account and give themselves a rikkle plug. Whether it’s their website, philosophy, a particularly excellent recipe for carrot and coriander soup or a selection of carefully arranged obscenities, that tab will allow them to do it. So make sure you’re following us, all twitterers.

barrels

Leading street art forum, the Wooster Collective reports on this barrel monster, created by artist U Live and You Burn, a student at North Carolina State University who was later arrested for stealing and damaging the traffic barrels.  Frog Design Mind makes the point that we are so used to common objects like traffic cones that they lose their impact, and perhaps unique installations like this can help to draw the driver’s attention back to the original hazard.  And indeed the construction company requested that the charges be dropped and even suggested that another barrel monster in the construction zone could help deter traffic there.

Thank God. Just slap bang in the middle of that boring gap between Easter and Christmas when there’s nothng to celebrate, the 2009 WBMC comes to save us from sinking into pits of melancholy. Why how can you be sad when you can be privy to the judging for the ‘Fu Manchu’ or ‘Freestyle Moustache’ categories.

And what a year! After Germany’s domination since the inception of the world tour, ‘Beard Team USA’ gave them a WW2-style thrashing, winning 12 of the 20 Gold medal spots so coveted by all beard-lovers/wearers the globe over.

Pictured – from left to right: The winners of the partial beard and full beard freestyle categories, shortly before indulging in the women and spoils so closely linked to the WBMC

RSS

You may have seen symbols like this one above littering the internet lately. Well, this is the symbol for an RSS feed. Some of you will know already how RSS works, many probably do not. (This recent study shows that 50% of blog readers have never heard of it and another 39% know of RSS but don’t use it.) But before you snort and say ‘only for geeks’ just hold on. RSS is bloody great.

In Layman’s terms, an RSS feed allows you to read all the new posts on your chosen blogs from your homepage, without having to visit each one. An RSS reader like Google Reader (which is far and away the most popular) will allow you to add hundreds of sites to your feed and click on each one in turn to snaffle up the content.

It is totally unobtrusive (no annoying spam etc) but saves you the hassle of having to remember to visit every website you like every day. All you need to use Google Reader is a google account (which can be set up just using an email address).

If you would like a more detailed explanation have a read of this. If you would like to add ShellsuitZombie to your RSS feed click here.

This has been well posted of late, but for those who have missed it, here are two HUNDRED retro illustrated film posters. Some well-known classics alongside other more obscure b-movies. Brilliant throughout though, even if just for a giggle.       Part 1 | Part 2

I wouldn’t usually post things of this nature, but this brilliant article from 160over90 about cheap logo design made me laugh so I want to share. A very good reason why not to use sites like this to save a bit of cash.
